Many DVD collectors may run into the problem of sharing their DVD movies with friends and backing up DVD files on their computer hard drive or a blank DVD disc. MacTheRipper is a free DVD Ripper (extractor) for Mac OS X. It can extract commercial DVD movies to your hard drive, minus all the copy protection and region controls put in place by DVD publishers.
MOV is a file extension used by the QuickTime-wrapped files. QuickTime Content (.mov, .qt), developed by Apple Computer, is a file format for storing and playing back movies with sound. This flexible format isn't limited to Macintosh operating systems.
Part 1, How to rip DVD using MacTheRipper.
Step 1, Download MacTheRipper.

Step 2, Rip and copy DVD for free. Insert your DVD movie into your DVD drive and launch the MacTheRipper. There are two major setting parts: Disc and Mode.
REC Region settings:
UOPS: Allow you to skip or fast-forward through most DVD content, such as warning screens, previews etc.
RCE Region:
If MacTheRipper displays "DISC RCE: CLEAR" after scanning the DVD, you can leave the option to OFF status.
If MacTheRipper displays "DISC RCE: -DETECTED-", you must set the option to the region in which the DVD was purchased.
De-Macrovision: Allow you to record your DVDs straight to VCR, or connect the DVD player through a VCR without getting a bunch of wavy lines. This is enabled by default.
Mode setting: Select the Full Disc Extraction Mode to reserve all the info in the inserted DVD disc.
Step 3, Complete DVD Ripping. You can find a folder in the save location. The output files extracted by MacTheRipper are saved as .VOB format.
Part 2, How to convert DVD to MOV video for Mac OS X?
If you want to play the ripped DVD using QuickTime, iMovie, iDVD, etc, just convert it to MOV on Mac OS. But MacTheRipper could only make a copy of your DVD, it could not convert DVD to any video files like MP4, MOV, MKV, etc. for playback on more devices. Thus, you have to find a free tool named iSquint to convert the ripped DVD to MOV.
